Once the medieval capital of Portugal, and its first capital, from 1131 to 1255, Coimbra has been the site of the country’s greatest university for the past seven centuries. Established in 1290, it is one of the most ancient universities in continuous operation in the world, and the conference location chosen for the IPA 16th World Congress.
The University of Coimbra has ca. 25.000 students and remains a world leading university that offers education and research at all study levels and in nearly all study fields. Its historical buildings were classified as a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 2013: "Coimbra offers an outstanding example of an integrated university city with a specific urban typology as well as its own ceremonial and cultural traditions that have been kept alive through the ages." The University of Coimbra is expected to receive half a million visitors in 2017.

Portugal is a top touristic destination in the world. Visitors easily find local people who can speak English, French or Spanish, and note their warm hospitality.
